Vaporsoft Records: A Decade of Independent Electronic Music
Vaporsoft Records turns ten today. Since its founding in Ithaca, New York, on February 4, 2014, the independent and exclusive label has grown through a catalog shaped by Vapora’s evolving production and visual identity. Ten release chapters now trace a path through hazy electronic music, experimental dance, vaporwave, bright beats, and ambient atmosphere.
The early albums established the foundation. Dystopia brought melancholic, nostalgic electronic and indie-pop textures into view, while For the Lost and the Damned explored a more futuristic, energetic direction. Together, they introduced a project willing to change its musical frame while keeping atmosphere and presentation closely connected.
The Hologram Plaza series made imagined space an increasingly visible part of that identity. Hologram Plaza 2 and 2.1 arrived in 2017; Hologram Plaza 3 followed in 2019, with 3.1 in 2020. Across those releases, retail interiors, familiar announcements, and everyday architecture became the language of a nostalgic vaporwave and mallsoft world. The longer pieces on Hologram Plaza 3 also changed the scale of that exploration, giving its settings more room within the tracklist.
Supermarket brought a brighter perspective in 2021. Its energetic, euphoric electronic palette and colorful food-inspired titles showed another use for everyday imagery. Vibes, Vol. 1 followed in 2022 with seventeen tracks and a production history reaching back to the founding year. That release connected a broad stretch of Vapora’s development to a retro and nostalgic frame.
The most recent albums, The Stuff of Dreams and Winter’s Fog, widened the catalog again in late 2023. The Stuff of Dreams paired electronic music, indie pop, and beats with an ethereal, energetic setting. Winter’s Fog approached atmosphere through seasonal ambient electronic music, making room for a different pace and mood. Their shared liminal and ethereal qualities connect them, while their distinct frames allow each to stand on its own.
Over a decade, Vapora’s work has developed a clearer sense of how a release can function as a whole. Track names, moods, genre combinations, and visual presentation increasingly contribute to a recognizable world. Maturity here means having more ways to express that identity, rather than settling into one sound and repeating it. The catalog can hold a mall interior, a bright supermarket, a dream, and a winter landscape without losing its connection to the same creative practice.
There are many projects planned for the future, and the label’s independent approach leaves room for that work to continue evolving. Details will arrive as releases take shape. For now, this anniversary is a chance to appreciate how far the catalog has expanded, while keeping attention on the possibilities still ahead.
Ten years after its beginning, Vaporsoft Records remains guided by the music and the vision around it. The next chapter can build on everything already made without being limited to what has come before.
